Helen Dial, 96
Dillon - Memorial services will be held late this summer for teacher and violinist Helen Finch Dial, 96. Burial will be in the Mountain View Cemetery.
Mrs. Dial died at the Parkview Acres Convalescent Center in Dillon Saturday.
She was born July 22, 1895, to Grant E. and Eleanor Davis Finch in West Union, Iowa. At age 13, she moved with her family to Dillon, where her father had accepted a professorship at Montana State Normal College, now Western Montana College.
She graduated from high school at Santa Barbara, Calif., then returned to Montana, where she received a bachelor's degree from the University of Montana , majoring in music.
She was a member of the national sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta, and also was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church.
She was a gifted musician, and after early study with Cecil Burleigh at UM, she studied violin with the late Theodore Spiering, a renowned violinist in New York. She taught violin in various colleges in New York and California, and also taught in 1924-25 in Dillon.
She received a master's degree in public school music from the Teachers College of Columbia University. In the following years, she arranged and conducted children's orchestras in the public schools of New Jersey, New York and California until her retirement.
She married Carl Dial in 1955 and they lived in Mill Valley, Calif., until his death in 1968. From that time, she maintained her home in Dillon. She lived in a retirement home in Helena for several years before returning to Dillon. She entered the Parkview Acres Convalescent Center last year.
She also was preceded in death by brothers Fred, Eugene and Robert Finch.
She is survived by nieces and nephews of Helena; Wallingford, Conn.; Indianapolis, Ind.; and East Kingston, N.H.
