While working on the family farm, Jeff was kicked in the chest by one of the families plow mules. He suffered for approximately a year after the accident with his mother and father dutifully caring for him. His brothers recalled seeing him bent over a steaming kettle inhaling various home remedy vapors, one of them a concoction of powered mustard Nettie had made, to help him breath. It would give him temporary relief but never for very long. Jeff would die from drowning in his own blood in his bed at age 18 while sleeping. His parents and brothers grieved deeply for the loss of their beloved son and brother.
There is no known photograph of Jeff.
