Shirley Freeman Payne of Akron, Alabama passed away on October 4, 2021 after a brief illness. She is preceded in death by her husband Oscar Payne, parents; David H. and Christine Freeman, sisters; Alice Brown and Barbara Kelly.

She is survived by her children, Larry Payne and his wife Tamika and Bruce Payne, grandson; Lawrence Payne, sister; Marjolena Payne, brother; David C. Freeman, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Shirley was very much involved in the community and a longtime member of Mt. Hebron Baptist Church in Akron, Alabama. She traveled when she was able, participated in civic events and worked in the educationl system of Hale County for a great portion of her career. She was instrumental in making sure that education was the forefront and enjoyed numerous clubs and activities throughout her life. Shirley will be remembered for her love of Alabama football, flowers and gardening. She will be so greatly missed by her children, extended family and the community she served with love and grace until she became ill and no longer able.

Due to the Covid virus, a private graveside service will be held for family and close friends at Five Mile Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery on Friday, October 8, 2021 with Bro. Tim McCool officiating and Magnolia Chapel South directing.
