Marie (Mary) Catherine Balko was born in (Kosice) Kosicka, Nova Ves, Czechoslovakia.

On December 9, 1909, 6 year old Marie arrived at Ellis Island with her mother Mrs. Anna (Buher) Balko and Marie's baby brother Istvan "Mikie" Balko. Istvan was just 1 1/2 years old while on this trip over and must have become sick while on board the ship. He was buried at sea. They were going to meet up with Anna's husband, Istvan Balko in Smithfield, Pennsylvania.

At some point they went back to Slovakia. Then on Christmas day 1920 they left Czechoslovakia to come back to the United States. They arrived on Jan 10, 1921. Mother Anna and daughter Marie (who was now 18) and her 9 year old sister named Anna were detained on Ellis Island upon their arrival because Anna, the daughter, had a fever. Anna died at USPHS Hospital Ellis Island #43 on February 19, 1921 from measles and is buried at Maple Grove Cemetery. (I have yet to locate her)She was just 9 years old.

Marie met her future husband while working as a candy maker in Cleveland, Ohio. She married the late Leon(Leo)Walter Wojtowicz on January 19, 1925 at St. Staneslaus Church in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio near Buckeye. The church has since burnt down. They raised five daughters while living on Hopkins Avenue, Lakewood, Cuyahoga, Ohio.

Marie was also the sister of the late Albert Stephen Balko, Sr. (b. Dec. 14, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio/d. July 16, 1996 in Middlefield, Geauga, Ohio)
