CO-FOUNDER OF THE UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH AT SEWANEE
Stephen Elliott was the 37th Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America. He was the first Bishop of Georgia and Provisional Bishop of Florida, and the first (and only) Presiding Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Confederate States of America.
BIRTH
August 31st, 1806
Stephen Elliott was born to Mr. & Mrs. Stephen Elliott,a prominent family in Beaufort, South Carolina. He was the son of Stephen Elliott the Botanist.
Stephen Elliott attended Harvard and graduated in 1825 from South Carolina College, where he was President of the Clariosophic Society. He studied law and practiced in Charleston and Beaufort, South Carolina from 1827 until 1833.
Stephen was a Co-founder of the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee.
DEATH
December 21st, 1866
Stephen Elliott passed away in Savannah, Georgia.
He was succeeded as Bishop of Georgia by John W. Beckwith.
