Raised as a carpenter, but fascinated with new technologies of cars, radios, and airplanes. He and his sister Marian built a Model T Ford from scrapyard parts as teens in Colorado and drove it cross country (no roads) to Pasadena in the mid-1920's. His ham radio call sign was W8SBA, and he was the first to broadcast from the top of Longs Peak in Colorado, and became a top radioman in the navy and later on airships with Goodyear. He also built a plane from spare parts in the Navy, and could pilot quite well. He was a top electrical engineer with Goodyear Aerospace and followed the management track as far as possible without taking his wife and family from Ohio. He was a thoughtful, loving, and amazingly learned man.
