Son of Jesse Carroll and Catherine Wilson. Maternal grandson of Jeremiah Wilson and Elizabeth Ridenour. His paternal grandfather is believed to be Thomas Carroll.

Elias was born in Anderson County, his parents having settled in the area after their marriage in 1833. Both were born in North Carolina, and they apparently migrated to Tennessee with their parents and siblings.

Elias was their second child, after the birth of his older brother James in 1834. Census records show that there were also three sisters in the family, all younger, and named Elizabeth, Sarah and Emiline. If there were other children born to Jesse and Catherine, they have yet to be identified.

When the Civil War began, he enlisted as a Private in the Union Army in March of 1862. He was a member of Company F, 16th TN Infantry, and quickly advanced to the rank of 1st Lieutenant of both Company H, 9th TN Cavalry and Company B, 11th TN Cavalry. He resigned his commission on 28 June 1865.

Having survived the war, he married Rachel Irene Sharp five months later in Maynardville, Union Co. TN. She was the daughter of Alford Sharp and Elizabeth Loy, whose respective families were among the first settlers of the Tennessee frontier.

Elias and Rachel turned their attention to farming, and were the parents of thirteen children, eleven of whom are known by name. It is believed that the remaining two were stillborn.

He was 73 years of age when he died of heart failure, survived by his beloved wife and a number of his children.
