REST IN PEACE SENATOR JOHN HENRY "SONNY" OSMEÑA

I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Senator John Henry "Sonny" Osmeña. We have lost another great statesman and staunch advocate against corruption in public service.

Sonny Osmeña was a fighter and a survivor. He survived the Plaza Miranda bombing in 1971. He was diagnosed with colon cancer. And just last year, he was among those who contracted COVID-19 and recovered from it.

He touched the lives of many Cebuanos and Filipinos throughout his extensive political career. In the 60s, Sonny Osmeña has served as Cebu City Councilor, Vice Mayor and Representative. He also eventually become Officer-in-Charge Mayor of Cebu City after the 1986 People Power Revolution. Apart from this, he served as Senator for several terms, and Mayor of Toledo City.

I fondly look back to Sonny's visits to my office when I was still Vice Mayor. We would talk about governance and our responsibilities in our respective local governments. He truly had a heart for the people.

My heartfelt condolences go out to his family. You will be remembered, Sonny!
