Florence is the daughter of Cecelia and George Derby

My grandmother, Celia, married a young publisher and bookman in Buffalo New York, George Hunter Derby. He died of Asiatic cholera, barely 30 years old, leaving a young widow with three small girls. Before his sudden death, George Derby had sent Hubert, and a young Irishman George L Kenny, both his employees, across the isthmus to San Francisco to start a bookstore with the books he, George Derby was (sic) sending around the Horn. Before the books arrived, George Derby was dead. Then his widow came to the rescue. Many years later she married a persistent suitor, George L Kennard [sic]. He owned a beautiful vineyard in Napa Valley, Oakville, and they lived there part of the year. Grandpa and Grandma had their little home on that property.
