Son of Joseph Francis Crotty and Anna Maria Adams, husband of Elsie Blanche Smith, whom he married on June 20, 1916 in Centereach, New York, and father of Ruth Winifred (married George F. Palomba), Jean Roberta (married Robert William Murphy) and John Adams Crotty. Stepson of Donald B. Smith.

Obituary - John Francis Crotty, 87, of Yonkers, who was a retired political reporter with the Brooklyn Eagle and a retired law secretary to former Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Mitchell May, died Friday at the Sarah Neuman Nursing Home in Mamaroneck after a long illness. Born September 21, 1890 in Brooklyn, he was a graduate of Poly Preparatory School there and St. Lawrence Law School. For 11 years, he was the political reporter with the now defunct Brooklyn Eagle and the Brooklyn Standard Union. He later worked as the law secretary to Justice May and retired from this position in 1956. In 1916 and 1917, he served with the First New York Cavalry at the Mexican border during the dispute there. On June 20, 1916, he was married to the former Elsie Smith in Centereach, L.I. She died in 1976. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. George (Ruth) Palomba, of Yonkers, and Mrs. Robert (Jean) Murphy, of Poughkeepsie; one son, John Adams, of Farmington Hills, Mich.; and seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
