Physician. George Shrady was an assistant surgeon in the United States Army during the Civil War. After the war, he returned to his private practice. Shrady gained national fame when he served former general and President Ulysses S. Grant on his deathbed. He later consulted with doctors who were attending to Frederick III of Germany and President James Garfield after he had been shot by an assassin. Shrady was one of the medical experts selected to witness the first execution by electrocution, this in 1890. Over the course of his career, Shrady held a number of consulting positions, as well as physician-in-chief to the hospitals of the New York Health Department. Shrady also served as editor for a number of publications, including his own, the "Medical Record."
