George was a private in the Civil War in Company G, 144th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted 22 Nov 1864 in Alton, Madison Co., IL. He mustered in 23 Nov 1864 in St. Louis, MO. He was credited with joining from Mounticello, Madison Co., IL 12th District. George was 5', 9" tall, had fair complexion, black hair and grey eyes. George mustered out 14 Jul 1865 in Springfield, Sangamon Co., IL. He was given one Enfield rifle and accoutrements when he was discharged.

After the Civil War, George lived in Mason Co., IL until 1871, Jerseyville, IL to about 1880, Litchfield, IL to about 1898, and the Soldiers & Sailors Home in Quincy, Adams Co., IL. His pension certificate # was 883,330.

Samuel W. FORD on 05 Sep 1904, the brother of George, brought the family Bible to a notary public, Wm. S. MILLS at Trenton, NJ. The Bible contained the birth date of George. The Bible was printed by A. PAUL, 72 Nassau Street, NY in 1824. It was stereotyped for the American Bible Society by BNUE?

George was a farmer in 1864 and a painter in 1880. He died at the home of his daughter, Nellie M. (wife of Nathaniel STEWART), in Venice, Madison Co., IL. The undertaker was E. SCHILDMAN.
