Daughter of Benjamin Allen and his wife Sarah.

She married 27 Dec 1819, Rowan Co., NC to John Kepley, son of Johann Keppel and Sarah Krawl Keppel, who were married 10 May 1796 in Cabarrus Co., NC

In about 1820, Charlotte and John went west with her and other related families to settle in Smith Co., Tennessee.

Charlotte Kepley is named in church records in Smith Co., TN.

According to the story, John Kepley drowned in 1828 or 1829 in Smith County, Tennessee while fording a river on his horse. He left Charlotte a widow with three young daughters. It's possible he drowned at a later date than this, but he and Charlotte were not living together in 1830.

In Aug 1829, Charlotte moved further west, again traveling with her parents and other relatives, to settle in Effingham (then Fayette) Co., Illinois.

The Allens, Charlottes's parents Benjamin and Sarah and her siblings and their families, were among the first settlers in Effingham County, where Charlotte served her neighbors as a midwife.

In 1830, Charlotte was listed next door to her parents as head of household:

1830 census, Fayette Co., IL, p. 239
Charlotte Kepley 0-0-0-0-0-0 2-1-0-0-0-1

One female 5-10; b. 1820-1821 - Leannah
Two females under 5; b. 1825-1830 - Mary & Nancy

Nearby in 1830 is Charlotte's future husband:

1830 census, Fayette Co., IL, p. 238

One male 20-30; b. 1800-1810 - John

One female under 5; b. 1825-1830 -

In 1831, the part of Fayette Co., IL that Charlotte and the Allens lived in was broken off and became part of the new Effingham County.

1836 - Charlotte's son Henry B. Kepley was born in Effingham Co., IL. The fact that she gave him the name of Kepley instead of Allen indicates that she was not yet married to her second husband, John Allen. Old family letters (which have since unfortunately been lost in a house fire) related that he was her own son, and not adopted.

1839, Effingham Co., IL - Charlotte remarried 1836-1840 to John Allen (no known relation). As in addition to Henry Kepley, she had two stepson under age five in 1840, they were probably married in 1839.

In 1840, Charlotte and John Allen were living next door to her parents Benjamin and Sarah Allen in Effingham Co., IL:

"Ada Harriet Miser was born in Somerset, Ohio, in 1847. Her parents were Henry and Ann M. Miser. She had a sister, Nora Miser Scott. Her family moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1860, and in 1867, Ada married Henry B. Kepley, who had his own law practice in Effingham, Illinois. At his urging, Ada attended the Union College of Law (now Northwestern) in Chicago from 1869 to 1870. There she earned her Bachelor of Laws in 1870. She was the first woman to graduate from law school in the United States.
