Private, serving in in the Second Regiment of Westchester County Militia under Colonel Thomas Thomas in 1777, for which he received 10 pounds, 13 shillings and 8 pence as pay. He was drafted from Colonel Thomas's regiment into Captain Richard Sackett's Company of Colonel Henry Ludington's Seventh Regiment of the Dutchess County Militia, in which he served from 13 August 1777 through 31 October 1777, receiving "six and two-thirds dollars" per month as pay.

Married in 1782, he and his bride originally attempted to settle near the Susquehanna River valley of northern Pennsylvania, but were driven eastward by Indians.

Pioneer settler of Harpersfield, Montgomery County (present-day Delaware County), New York in 1784, in the area that later became known as Bloomville. The area just east of Bloomville in the Town of Kortight where he and his numerous descendants lived was known as "Kiffville", through which flows Kiff Brook along the edge of Kiff Brook Road.

He was appointed pathmaster of the Goalsborough district of Harpersfield township at the town meeting of 26 May 1789.
