22735 Corporal A L Stanton, Commander-in-Chief's Bodyguard. In Nov 1900 Lord Roberts authorised the raising of the Commander in Chief's Body Guard, a fighting regiment, 570 strong, with 2 guns, 2 pom-poms, and 2 machine-guns, commanded by by Major Laing, an officer who had served in the 91st and 93rd regiments (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders), and had settled in South Africa. The corps took the field in the Orange River Colony. Their first major contact was on 3 Jan 1901 at Kromspruit, near Reitz (Brevet Lieutenant Colonel Laing and 17 were killed, 22 wounded) when they were undertaking a reconnaissance of the route between Lindley and Reitz, Orange River Colony. Corporal Stanton was dangerously wounded (gunshot wound to chest) in the action and died at 29 Stationary Hospital, Heilbron, Orange River Colony on 6 Jan 1901. He was buried the same day.
