Martha Jeanette Burger, 93, of Lewiston, passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at the Lewiston Villa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pastor Wilfred R. Burger, and her son, John. She is survived by her daughter, Janet, and her brother, John Reed. Martha went to school for teacher's training before she was married. She was very supportive of her husband during his career. Martha was a prize-winning photographer, as was her father before her, and she inspired her children to practice photography as well. She shared her love of the outdoors with her children and furthered their interest in Astronomy and Geology. The family took camping trips to the North Shore of Lake Superior almost every summer, and then to South Carolina, and the southwest, with a Siamese cat named Pepper in tow. By far, the Rocky Mountains were her favorite destination. While Martha waited for her son John to come home from Vietnam, she and her daughter enjoyed hunting for agates on the North Shore and fossils in gravel pits. She encouraged her daughter in her craft projects, drawing and painting, with quiet patience and good humor and love. A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Thursday, August 18, 2011 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Lewiston with visitation one hour prior. Reverend Louise Stromberg will officiate. Interment in the Oakland Cemetery in St. Paul will take place at a later date.
