Margaret Ann (known as Peggie Ann) Bilyeu Melton was remembered as always wearing a black granny gown and the shawl that she is wearing in her only known photograph. When a neighbor was going to have a baby, a member of the family would ride in on horseback and Peggy Ann would ride out with them riding double behind him and then help with the delivery of the new baby.
She applied for a widow's pension for her husband's civil war service when she was 70 years old. Mrs. Melton declared that she was married under the name of Margaret Bilyeu to said Martin F. Melton on the 21 day of Oct. 1838 by James Murry at Ruben Melton's on Kings River Ark. and that she had not remarried since his death. She made her mark on the document on 17 October 1890.
Peggy Ann died at the age of 86 at the home of her son, Green, as a result of pneumonia. She is buried in McCoy Cemetery near Ozark in Christian County, Missouri.
