James Clinton Jones, Jr., (affectionately known as Smarty, Jim, JJ, and Pops) passed away peacefully at his home in Gulf Shores, AL, on Wednesday afternoon, October 13, 2021.
He was born November 25, 1943, and was preceded in death by his parents, James C. Jones, Sr. and Nan Brown Jones and his sister Rose Marie Bowman.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Hawkins Jones (BJ) and their daughter, Robin Magee, her husband, Patrick Magee, three granddaughters and one grandson.

Jim was born and grew up in midtown Memphis, TN, attending Central High School and Memphis State University. He was employed by Hohenberg Brothers Company and later by Cargill, Inc. for over 38 years, retiring in 2000.

An avid runner, he competed in many 5Ks, 10Ks, Half-Marathons, Marathons and a few Adventure Races. He also enjoyed bicycling and volunteered with both the Memphis Runners Club and The Memphis Hightailers Bicycle Club. When his knees told him "no more running", he dedicated his energies to working out, lap swimming, long walks and cycling. He loved riding his bike around the neighborhood and on the trails of the Gulf Shores State Park.

A visitation for friends and family is scheduled October 29, 2021, from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home located at, 5599 Poplar Avenue. A private family burial of ashes will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
