Charlene Joyce Wood "Our SUGAR"
February 23,1931 - November 9,2019
Charlene was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Charles Martin and Willie Pearl Snodgrass. She was second in line of three children having two brothers, Beal and James.
Her family moved soon after her birth to a farm in rural Oklahoma where she rode a pony to school everyday. We never heard the, I walked to school uphill in the snow barefoot stories from her. She always told everyone how grateful she was living on the farm during the depression because her family never went without the things needed.
By the time Charlene reached her early teens her family moved back to Oklahoma City to live near her grandparents.
While in high school she joined the band and became the first female drum major in Oklahoma. She always remembered the fun she had leading the Central High School Band through the downtown streets of Oklahoma City. She could twirl her baton with the very best and sometimes performed with fire.
After high school she married her life long love, George Herbert Wood, who proceeded her in death in 1995. The two went on to have six children, moving many places across the United States while George worked in the aerospace industry. Every new city would be a challenge for Charlene to make a beautiful home for her ever growing family. Each stop would find her becoming a Brownie leader, Girl Scout leader, or Den Mother to keep her kids entertained and busy.
Any adventure, no matter her age, she was ready willing and able, many times traveling with her grown children and grandchildren. She loved Disney World and Universal Studios and would be the first in line to ride the steel roller coasters, even being pushed in a wheelchair when she couldn't walk, to get on.
She loved going to the lake house and spending hours on the pontoon to watch grandkids ski or just to ride. Wherever her kids and grandkids were, she wanted to be with them.
Everything she did in her life was first, for her children then her grandchildren. The grandkids were the very light of her life. They could do no wrong in her eyes and she loved and accepted everything about them. Every single one was her favorite, and every single one felt it. Her thoughts were always for her family, even passing away on George's Birthday to go home to him.
Charlene was a kind, generous, accepting loving soul. Even with so many family members there was always room for more to love.
We are all better people for knowing her. She will be forever missed by everyone who knew her.
