Gloria Afton Gunn Hancock was born on April 13, 1930 in Pocatello, Idaho to Benjamin George Gunn and Afton Priscilla Christensen Gunn. She was raised in Pocatello, Idaho, graduating from Pocatello High School (class of 1948). Gloria attended Brigham Young University and had a lifelong passion for learning—a joy she shared with her family. While attending BYU, Gloria met the love of her life, handsome Joseph Perry Hancock from Mesa, Arizona. They were sealed for time and all eternity on January 11, 1952, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Shortly thereafter they moved to Tucson, Arizona where they welcomed two children into the family: Karen Belin and Priscilla Robin. Gloria encouraged Joseph to return to BYU for an advanced degree. In the Fall of 1955, they returned to Provo, Utah moving into one of the very last married student housing apartments. While in Provo, Utah, they welcomed their third daughter, Cynthia Gay. After his BYU graduation, Joseph and Gloria moved to San Diego, California in 1958. They bought a home to raise their family in and later welcomed three additional children: Gloriadawn, Heidi Katrina and David Joseph. Gloria was a gifted musician who delighted in playing the organ and piano at church. She taught piano and choir for decades to people of all ages. She enjoyed antique keepsakes—sharing details of their history with anyone willing to listen. Gloria had stalwart faith in Jesus Christ. She emulated Him in her generosity, uncanny ability to see good in others, cheerful disposition in providing service and creating a safe, accepting, and loving environment wherever and with whomever she was with. Gloria passed away at home on October 29, 2021 surrounded by loved ones. Gloria is survived by six children: Karen Noel of Pocatello, Idaho; Priscilla Hancock of San Diego, California; Cynthia Strech of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Gloriadawn Hulon of Lehi, Utah; Heidi (Tim) Skaggs of Spanish Fork, Utah; and David (Sarah) Hancock of La Mesa, California. She had 32 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren. Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, husband, all siblings (Morris, Morwin, Benjamin Jr., and a grand-daughter Aprildawn Hulon). The family extends deep gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff of Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla and Comfort and Peace Hospice for providing attentive, loving care for our dear mother.
