Mary Frances Hodges entered the kingdom of Heaven on June 14, 2020, and was predeceased by parents E.A. and Eva Izell, husband of 48 years Dr. Howard Hodges, sisters Alene Adkins and Wanda Joyner, and niece Mary Catherine Joyner. She was born in Paris, Ark., August 15, 1935.

Graduating from UA-Fayetteville with bachelor degrees in English and History and a master's degree in education, she was a life-long teacher who spent 20 years teaching composition and research in UALR's Department of Rhetoric and Writing. She also taught part-time at Pulaski Tech.

Her writing included historical fiction and non-fiction related to the Civil War, Arkansas history, genealogy, spiritual growth, and teaching. She contributed four articles to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas, did extensive genealogical research, and made many state and national conference presentations on teaching, writing, and historical research.

She is survived by children Elaine Hodges and Clark Hodges and nephew John Joyner of Little Rock and two grandchildren of the heart, Margaret Cecilia and John Paul Ayala of Los Angeles, California.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation arrangements are by Ruebel Funeral Home, ruebelfuneralhome.com.

Dr. Howard L. Hodges died April 7, 2006 . Born on December 11, 1935 in Monroe, Louisiana, he was the son of Woodrow and Lillian Hodges. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary Frances Izell Hodges, and his children Elaine Hodges of Little Rock and Clark Hodges of Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is also survived by two grandchildren of the heart, Margaret Cecilia and John Paul Ayala of Las Vegas, Nevada. Dr. Hodges is a graduate of Hendrix College, with a Masters and a Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Dr. Hodges was a faculty member of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock for thirty-one years where he taught Analytical Chemistry; was Chairman of The Chemistry Department twice, and the Associate Dean of University College. He was the founding Director of the Donaghey Scholars Program, and founding Director of Academic Advising. He was faculty sponsor of Alpha Epsilon Delta, the pre-health care fraternity, for over twenty years. In 1994 Dr. Hodges received the Bailey Foundation's award as the Outstanding Teacher at UALR. He is listed in Who's Who in the South and Southwest and in Outstanding American Educators. He was an honorary member of Golden Key. In 1997 he retired as a Professor Emeritus. In retirement he served as a volunteer at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center and was Vice President of the St. Vincent Auxiliary. He had served on the Vestry at St. Mark's Episcopal Church.

Other survivors are a sister-in-law Alene Adkins of Little Rock and sister-in-law Wanda and her husband Joe Joyner of Corpus Christi, Texas and an nephew John Joyner of Little Rock.

Upon hearing of Dr. Hodges' death, long time friends wrote: "Howard has left such a wonderful legacy. He has been the guide for generations of students. He always had so much love."

The family wishes to thank: Dr. Bradley Baltz, and his loving staff, Dr. Harold Hedges III; and many other physicians who took care of Dr. Hodges the past eleven years.

The celebration of Dr. Hodges' life will be 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church with Father Rocki Proffit as Homilist and Celebrant. Internment will be at St. Mark's Columbarium. The family will greet friends and former students at a reception in the Parish Hall following the internment.

In lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be made to Baptist Hospice, The Eucharistic Ministry at St. Mark's; St. Vincent Foundation, or the UALR Chemistry Department.
