Ada Marie Milliman Miller died peacefully in her sleep December 29, 2010.
Ada was born November 4, 1930 in a small house in Himrod, NY. She was the daughter of Bernice L. Kennedy and George W. Milliman. She grew up with four brothers and sisters in Penn Yan, Geneva and Ithaca, NY, graduating from Ithaca High School in 1949.
When she was a teenager, she lived with the Alfred C. Davey family as a mother's helper and has been embraced as a member of that family ever since. Davey was the head of the Salvation Army in Ithaca at the time and Ada joined her foster siblings by playing the cornet in the Salvation Army Band and ringing the bells for the annual Christmas kettle drive. At her 80th birthday party, the current band surprised Ada by arriving to play some of her favorite hymns and marches for her.
Ada was a stay at home mother for many years, and when her children were older, she worked in Ithaca as a clerk at the law office of Treman and Clines and then at the Ithaca City School District as secretary to the Vice Principal, Morgan Kelts, at Boynton Jr. High School and later as secretary to the Superintendent of Schools for Richard Backer, Gordon Bruno and James Lorthridge, before retiring in 1993.
In her retirement years, Ada and her husband, Henry W. Miller, or Wally, as many people know him, enjoyed going to their winter home in Sarasota, FL.
Ada also was a member of the Red Hat Society and at the time of her death was the Queen of the local chapter, Gorges Gals of Ithaca.
Ada was devoted in her Christian faith, having been a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church of Ithaca for many years and later attending Bethel Grove Bible Church, and most recently having joined Christ Chapel. Her unwavering faith was a source of strength and comfort during the past year in her battle against pancreatic cancer.
Ada is predeceased by her son, Martin D. Miller (Debra), son-in-law Gary A. Woollard, brothers Francis Milliman (Nina), Malcolm Milliman, half-brother Glen Johnson, and sister June Milliman Wagner (James).
Ada is survived by her husband, Henry W. Miller, daughter June Miller Woollard, granddaughters Heather Miller and Jillian Miller Good (Brandon) and grandson, M. David Miller, Jr. (Christan), and her brother Gene E. Milliman (Martha) and half-brother, John Milliman (Mary) and numerous nieces and nephews. As a part of her adopted family, she is also survived by Dr. Frederick Davey (Doris), Alfred Davey (Jeanne) and Beth Davey Savery (Donald ) and their children and grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Chapel in the spring. Ada's family would like to express their gratitude and deep appreciation for the nurses and aides at Hospicare of Ithaca. They were there whenever needed by Ada or her family. Their caring and compassion is unmeasured. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in her name to Hospicare or the Salvation Army. Information from the Wagner Funeral Home.
