In 1952, he was admitted to the bar and practiced law from 1954 to 1984. From 1963 to 1977, he served in the Illinois State Senate. He also served as an Assistant State Attorney for DuPage County, Illinois. In 1984, he ran, as a Republican, for a seat in the United States House of Representatives and was successful in the November general election. He went on to serve in Congress until 1998, when he stepped down. After leaving Congress, he served on several boards and councils. He passed away after a battle with Alzheimer's disease.
