Dad was born on 05 Aug 1936 in Clarks LA and died peacefully in his sleep at home on 14 Nov 2021 in Vancleave MS. He was the oldest son of Elige Cornelius McBroom and Cassie Rose May. He married his high school sweetheart Ima Grace Plunkett on 16 Oct 1954 in St Louis MO and they were married for 22 years when she died. On 11 May 1985, he married Geraldine Medio Allen.
He was raised in the sawmill towns in North Louisiana where his father worked. After graduating Castor HS in 1954, he immediately enlisted in the US Air Force. He and mom raised their four children in Missouri, Maine, Philippines, California, Turkey and finally in Biloxi MS. In between these assignments, he spent a year in both Korea and Vietnam, and retired as a TSgt, US Air Force, with twenty years of service. Thanks to Mr Jim, his sponsor, and the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) team in Biloxi, Dad truly began life in 1967 and is one of the very few to receive a 50 Year coin celebrating his sobriety. After retiring from the Air Force, Dad became a college student, earning his Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi. He then taught school for the next 25 years, retiring as the Associate Dean of Industrial Arts at Gulf Coast Community College.
Other than teaching, Dad loved, really loved.......books! He was constantly reading and could not resist a great story by Costain, DeMille, Burke, Grisham, or humorous tales by Rooney or Kuralt. He later owned a small book store in Vancleave MS, before retiring to his lake home.
Dad was predeceased by his parents, wife Ima Grace, brother Robert Lee McBroom, half-brother Earl (Jack) McBroom, half-sisters Pearl McBroom Christofferson and Mildred McBroom Bradshaw, and step-son Kevin Allen. He is survived by his wife Jeri; son Doug McBroom (wife Kathy); daughters Grace McBroom Douglas (husband David), Kristy McBroom and Charlie McBroom; grandchildren Doug Jr, Daniel (wife Ashley), Amber (husband Jack), Rachel and Gracie; great-grandchildren Andrew, Danny, Stella and Posy; step-son Michael Allen; and brother Kenny McBroom.
