HOLD SERVICE FOR MRS. HUDDLESTON
Funeral services were held today for Mrs. Ellen Huddleston, who was the wealthiest colored resident in Los Angeles and a pioneer of Los Angeles and Southern California since 1851 when she crossed the plains from Mississippi to California in company with a party of 26, of whom she was the last survivor. At one time, Mrs. Huddleston owned the property on which the Los Angeles City hall now stands, clear through to Spring street. She was born in Hynes county, Mississippi in 1838. At the time of crossing the plains her family consisted of her mother, Biddy Mason and two sisters, Harriet and Anne. They stopped over at Salt Lake for awhile and then traveled on to San Bernardino, eventually reaching their destination at Santa Monica canyon. Mrs. Huddleston and her relatives narrowly missed being taken to Texas as slaves, legislation safeguarding them from that fate being passed just at the time when they reached Santa Monica. At the age of 19, Mrs. Huddleston was married to Charles Owens to whom were born two children, Robert Curry and Henry Lewis. Her son, Robert Curry Owens survives her. Mrs. Huddleston died Friday at the age of 83 at her home 1408 Eleventh street. Funeral services will be held at 2p.m. today from the Independent church, Eighteenth and Paloma streets under the direction of Smith & Williams funeral parlors.
