The son of Alexander Love & Jane C. (McAllen) Horner, he married Sarah Jane Witherow sometime during January 1828 and fathered Sarah Margaret (b. 01/05/29 - married James X. McGaughey and Thomas McAllen), Jane Amanda (b. 11/22/30), William Alexander (b. 01/07/33), Silas McAllen (b. 01/01/35 - 1st Md PHB Cav), John Ross (b. 01/12/37 - 20th NY Mil), Anna Eliza (b. 05/09/39), David Witherow (b. 03/19/42 - 21st Pa Cav), Eli Grier (b. 03/19/44), Mary Cooper (b. 03/22/46 - married Theodore B. McAllister, 1st Md PHB Cav), and Charles Finley (b. 04/28/49). In 1860, he was a farmer presumably living in Mountjoy Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Gettysburg August 27, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Frederick, Maryland, September 9 as captain of Co. C, 1st Maryland Potomac Home Brigade Cavalry. A special order issued April 23, 1862, apparently was intended to discharge him but was not carried out. He tendered his resignation June 10, 1862, and the army accepted it that day.

Sarah Jane died in 1866, and he married Margaret Witherow Smith.
