Born in Jesup, Georgia on February 1, 1888. A son of John Walter Westberry and Mary Elizabeth Gruber (Groover). Husband of Vera Lovada Griffis. Father of Hazel Westberry Paesano;Glynice Westberry; Hayden Westberry; Dwight Emory Westberry (all to second wife Vera Griffis Westberry). Mattie Mae Westberry Lambert and Helen Westberry Fowler(both to first wife Bertha Orila Thornton). First cousin to Anne Nichols (writer of "Abie's Irish Rose"). William was a veteran of WWI. He served fro 8-26-1918 to 8-27-1919 and was honorably discharged. He was assigned to the Demobilization Ctr. Unit #1 at Camp Gordon, Georgia at the time of discharge. His rank was a Private. He registered in the Army as "Alvin" Westberry and his residence was Odum, Georgia. He occupation was listed as "farming." His employer was his uncle, James Randall Westberry. He was listed as being of medium height with brown eyes and black hair.
Obituary: William Alvin Westberry, 85, died Monday in the VA hospital in Dublin after an extended illness. The Wayne County native was a retired section foreman with the Seaboard Coastline Railroad. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2:30 pm at the NeSmith-Harrison Funeral Home with the Reverend Robert Dougherty officiating. Mr. Westberry is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Mae Lambert of Augusta; Mrs. Hazel Paesano of Pittsburgh, PA and Mrs. Helen Fowler of Tampa, Florida; two sons, Hayden Westberry of Waycross and Dwight Westberry of Tampa, Florida; sixteen grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Morris Thornton; Billy Thornton; Farris Thornton; Dewaine Thornton; Ralph Thornton and Robert Riddle. Burial was in the Jesup City Cemetery under the direction of the NeSmith-Harrison Funeral Home.
