Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the snow on the mountain's rim,
I am the laughter in children's eyes,
I am the sand at the water's edge,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle Autumn rain,
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the star that shines at night,
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die...
Attention: The photo of Macy Mazelle Carter and Daniel Kirkland Griffis was copied from this site and added to Ancestry.com. It was identified as her sister Lavinia and her husband Oscar. The original photo was given to me by my grandmother, Vera Griffis Westberry and her sister, Doris Cleo Griffis Sullivan (both daughters of Daniel Kirkland Griffis and Macy Carter Griffis). There is no question that this photo is Daniel Kirkland Griffis and Macy Mazelle Carter and NOT Lavinia Carter and her husband Oscar Griffis.
Born February 21, 1888. Died December 6, 1922 ( in childbirth). Her daughter, Macy Margaret died 15 days after birth.Daughter of William Riley and Linnie Sapp Carter. Sister to: Jacob Henry; Mamie Irene Carter Thornton; William E;Susie H. Carter Thornton; Ella N. Carter Curry; Mildred Carter Griffis; Jackson; Leona Carter Griffis; Lavinia Carter Griffis and Miriam Carter Pope. Wife of Daniel Kirkland Griffis (married September 5, 1909). Mother of Vera Griffis Westberry; Lera Griffis Smith; Doris "Cleo" Griffis Sullivan: Joseph Delmus Griffis; Cleveron Alois Griffis Mayo and Margaret Griffis. Vera Westberry, daughter of Macy, stated that Macy had contracted pneumonia after helping her father, William "Riley" Carter cut down some sugar cane during a rain storm. Macy's death certificate states that the cause of death was "Shock following confinement complicating influenza." Macy's physician, Dr. J. Lawton Tyre has warned Macy not to have another child because she had had complications during other deliveries. Her sister, Mildred Carter Griffis and her mother, Linnie Sapp Carter had both died while having children. Vera Westberry described her mother's death and funeral: "We had a dog named "Boss." When mama died, the dog sat outside of the door and howled three times. The baby died shortly after mama died. It was raining on the day that mama and the baby were buried in the Big Creek cemetery. A wagon pulled the coffin up to the cemetery and it was parked beneath a birch tree" (still standing in the cemetery).Macy is always described as a kind and giving woman. She is distantly related to President Jimmy and other famous Carters of Virginia.
