He was a student at the Oakland Branch of the University of Michigan (located at Pontiac). He participated in the Califoria Gold Rush of 1849, later settling in Virginia City, Nevada. About 1871, he returned to Michigan in poor health where he lived in Tawas City with his half brother, William B. Whittemore. He died at Detroit, where he had been a patient at Harper Hospital for several years.
