Vincent J. Slaby, 73, passed away peacefully at home on Dec. 2, 2021 with his wife and daughter at his side. He had Parkinson's with PSP.

Vince was born on March 9, 1948 - lucky no. 7 of 9 children to Jane (Wawrzyniak) and Alex Slaby. In June 1968, after graduating from Washington High School, he joined the Marine Corps and served his country proudly in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged as LCpl, returning home on Christmas Eve 1969. Once a Marine, always a Marine.

On June 21, 1975, he married his high school sweetheart Helen (Jasinski) Slaby, beginning 46 years of work, adventures and love in marriage. They have a daughter, MaryJane Slaby (Dustin Dopirak).

Vince loved traveling, being outdoors and golfing with his brothers. They had a "brothers' invitational" with a traveling trophy, and he once played Medinah Country Club. He enjoyed running in biathlons and triathlons. For years, he hosted and organized themed family reunions.

He was a diehard ND football and women's basketball fan. He loved going to games, often with his daughter, and especially when he got press box seats for football.

Vince was always there to crack a joke, and the master of the deadpan comment. He would come up with elaborate and goofy projects or wear costumes just to make others smile.

He was a member of the ushers' club at St. Stan's Church in New Carlisle, American Legion, PNA, VFW and U.S. Marine Corps Heritage Fund. He retired from Eckrich Meats after more than 30 years.

A wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin and friend, he will be missed by Helen, MJ and Dustin; siblings Mary Tekip, Stella Chlebowski, Wanda (Bill) Bain and David (Darlene) Slaby; mother-in-law Maria Jasinski, sister-in-law Sophia Navalance, brothers-in-law Dick Coverdill, Joe and John Jasinski and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents, father-in-law Jan Jasinski; siblings Al Slaby, Rose Coverdill, Pat Luberts and Carol Friend and in-laws Gene Chlebowski, Larry Friend and Nancy and Sue Slaby.

His family is thankful to his caregivers and nurses of the past several years.

To honor Vince, please do an act of kindness and/or donate to Toys for Tots or Michiana Partners for Parkinson's, 50698 State Road 933, South Bend, IN 46637.
