PEKIN  Harold George Hilst, 82, of 1540 El Camino Dr., passed away at 8:52 a.m., Monday, December 17, 2007 at Pekin Hospital. He was formerly of 302 S. Park Ave., Manito for many years.

Born October 7, 1925 in Green Valley, he was the son of Arvil and Irene Hilst VanNattan.

Harold married Elvabelle Golden on March 26, 1949 in Spring Lake Township, rural Tazewell County. She died August 28, 1993 in Pekin.

He was also preceded in death by a step-brother, Virgil VanNattan.

Surviving are 3 sons, Randy N. (Jeri Lynn) Hilst of Pekin, James H. (Kristine) Hilst of Manito, and Steven R. Hilst of Beardstown; 1 daughter, Ruth A. (Allen) Messman of Manito; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 1 half-sister, James Maile of Pekin; 1 half-brother, Terry (Dottie) VanNattan of Pekin; and a step-sister, Leota (Harlan) Underwood of Pekin.

Harold worked for Jansen and Schaeffer Construction Company in Pekin for over 25 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of Laborers Local #231 in Pekin for over 50 years.

He was a member of the Community United Methodist Church in Manito.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Asian Pacific theater.

Harold enjoyed fishing and was a member of the Sinkers Club in Fulton County.

He was a Chicago Cubs baseball fan and a NASCAR (especially Dale Earnhardt, Sr.) fan.

Harold's funeral will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, December 20, 2007 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel. Rev. Richard Seed will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Meadow Lawn Cemetery in Manito.
