PATRICIA B. SHUTTA
Bernardston, MA — Patricia Barbara (Spear) Shutta, 84, passed away at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield on Tuesday evening, November 30, 2021, surrounded by her family. She was born on February 18, 1937 in Amherst, MA, daughter of Wallace and Katherine (Wanczyk) Spear. Pat graduated Amherst High School in 1955.

On June 15, 1957, Pat was married to Alfred M. Shutta, Sr. in Amherst, son of Steven Sr. and Myrtle (Grochowski) Shutta . They had met at a dance at Westover Air Force base in Chicopee while Al was serving in the Air Force. Four boys and two girls joined them over the next 8 years as they moved both on and off Air Force bases in Pennsylvania, France, Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, and lastly Illinois, before eventually settling in Massachusetts. They were Bernardston residents for over 40 years. At the time of Al's death in 2019, they had been husband and wife for 61 years.

Besides raising six children, Pat also worked in a variety of local businesses including Hardigg Industries and Channing L. Bete. She was completely devoted to her family and subsequent generations. She was an accomplished cake decorator, an "up-at-dawn" tagsaler, and a great lover of "all-things Christmas." She was an enthusiastic fan of "Survivor" and enjoyed watching it with her family. Her Catholic faith was very important to her. She and Al contributed to many charities worldwide.

Mom leaves a son Steven of East Hawley, son Joseph and wife Lorie of Bernardston, daughter Susan Goodhind and her husband Timothy of Sunderland, daughter Sharon Parsons and her husband Steven of Northfield and son David and his wife Kriss of Gill; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Her son Alfred Jr. passed away in 2012. Also surviving are two sisters, Josephine Matusek of Tennessee and Carol Joaquin of Holyoke, MA and a brother-in-law, David Stratford of Bernardston. A third sister, Alice Stratford, predeceased her. There are many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Friday, December 10 beginning at 4 pm at Kidder Funeral Home, 1 Parker Avenue, Northfield. A religious service will be held by Father Thomas Lisowski of St. Patrick's Church, Northfield. A graveside service will be held at the family's discretion. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you send a donation to a nursing home of your choice or pay a visit there.

A "Celebration of Life" will be held by the family at a later date. We love you, Mom. Don't let Dad and Al Jr. run you ragged. Masks will be required.
