Chester Allan Bamforth, 88, died in Sentara Leigh Hospital March 6, 2002. He was born November 5, 1913 in Lincoln, Mass., to Charles H. and Alice M. Cousins Bamforth. The youngest of seven children, he is survived by his twin sister, Clara B. Knight and two sisters, Grace B. Corrao and Beatrice B. Snelling.

Chester was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Helen Satchwell Bamforth. He is survived by two sons, C. Allan Bamforth Jr. and wife, Linda, Ralph R. Bamforth and wife, Mary Beth; a daughter, Grace Marie B. Garriott and husband, Dick; four grandchildren, Anna Lee Bamforth, Richard E. Garriott Jr. and wife, Suzanne, Beth Anne Campbell and husband, Tim, and Holly M. Garriott; a stepgranddaughter, Kathryn L. Dragas; three great-granddaughters, Madison R. Garriott, Meredith K. Garriott and Annellise M. Garriott; and a great-grandson, Thomas R. Campbell.

Chester graduated from Norview High School. He was a cabin boy on a freighter and traveled throughout the orient. He attended Old Dominion University when it was the William and Mary Extension and completed VPI School of Engineering Defense Training Program. He and his wife owned and operated a successful land surveying business in the Kempsville area, Chester A. Bamforth, Land Surveyor Co. He was a past member of Ocean View Baptist Church, Kempsville Baptist Church, and attended Community United Methodist Church. He was a Virginia Licensed Surveyor, past member of the Virginia Association of Surveyors and a past president of the Tidewater Chapter of the Virginia Association of Surveyors. He was a past Master of the Ocean View Masonic Lodge, and a past member of the Kempsville Ruritan Club.

A graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens with Dr. G. Keith Almond officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives at Woodlawn Funeral Home and Crematory today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Salvation Army, the Kempsville Volunteer Rescue Squad or Community United Methodist Church. His children and grandchildren invite family and friends to join them at the home of his daughter and son-in-law immediately following the graveside service.
