Obituary, Chadwick Funeral Service (New London, NH), Thu, 9 Dec 2021:

Albert W. Bachelder passed away peacefully on November 27, 2021, at Peabody Home, Franklin, NH, at the age of 94.

Al was born in Brockton, Mass., on May 28, 1927 to Willis M. and Clarisse L. Bachelder. He attended schools in Brockton, graduating from Brockton High School in 1945. He worked as a paper route carrier for the Brockton Enterprise, a YMCA camp counselor, served as the high school's official photographer and participated in numerous science clubs and school plays. Al was also active in Scouting – Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, progressing through all the ranks and eventually to Eagle.

After high school, Al went directly into the Navy for radar training. As WWII came to an end, his Atlantic fleet assignments involved the destroyer USS Fox and the USS Ariel, a refrigerated troop supply ship. This was followed by three years at MIT, summers as a boys' camp head counselor, a period of work at Sprague Electric, and then a draft back into the service as the Korean conflict got underway. This time the draft was into the Army combat engineers but was shortly reassigned to the Air Force under the SCARWAF program with assignment to the 811th Engineering Aviation Battalion for electrical work on the airfields in Korea.

Following discharge and graduation from MIT in 1954 as an electrical engineer, Al went to work for Southern New England Telephone in Connecticut. As communication concepts advanced, he spent an additional year at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on new technology and time at Iowa State studying engineering economics and statistics. During his 35-year association with the telephone industry, he managed a variety of engineering organizations involved in purchasing, implementing, and the maintenance of switching and transmission systems. While working in New York with AT&T he helped coordinate engineering work in the transmission field throughout the Bell System. He was a member of the Bell System Switching Technical Support Group and IEEE.

For nearly thirteen years Al was the scoutmaster of Troop 491 in Madison, CT. The troop grew to some 65 boys and regularly produced several Eagles each year. Al was awarded the Silver Beaver in 1987 and the Madison Lions Club Public Service Award in 1988.

Upon retirement, the Bachelders moved to Newbury, NH, where they continued to pursue interests in square dancing, the outdoors, and travel, and also joined their local church choir and the Area Choir. Al was a member of the Newbury Veterans group and for many years a member of the Country Squires. He also served on the Newbury Planning Board, the Upper Valley Regional Planning Commission, and the Capital Improvement Program Committee. In 1997, Al was elected as a Supervisor of the Checklist and continued in that capacity till 2017. At the Town Meeting in 2009, Al was awarded recognition for work in several of these areas.

Al is survived by his wife, Mary P. Bachelder, his daughter, Karen Bachelder of Concord, NH, and son, Kevin Bachelder, of Battleground, IN. A funeral service and reception is planned for the Spring of 2022. Military burial at Marshall Cemetery will also be held in Spring of 2022. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the charity of your choice, in Albert's name.
