Joseph Andrew Grissom is the son of Oliver Martin Grissom and Elizabeth (Gregory) Grissom. He is the husband of Amanda M. Ware. Their children are George Washington, Francis Elizabeth, Eliza Jane, Finas Andrew, Joseph Montgomery, Viola Caroline, Alexander Christopher, Amanda Melvina, and Mary Allena "Lena" Grissom.

He enlisted in the Civil War on March 14, 1862 as a Private in Company H, 26th Mississippi Calvary, CSA. Company H became Company I near the end of the war. His captain was John H. Tucker. On March 5, 1863, he was wounded in the battle at Thompson's Station, Tennessee. His unit surrendered and was taken prisoner at Citronelle, Alabama on May 4, 1865. He as paroled at Gainesville, Alabama on May 12, 1865. His commanding general was Lt. General Richard Taylor.
