Age 81y 3m 20d, Mildred Schechinger died Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Robert Von Tersch, Joyce Will, Eugene Von Tersch, Marie Von Tersch, Darlene Rau, Bonnie Maguire, and Maxine Sievertsen.

After being baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance, Mildred graduated from St. Paul's Catholic School in Defiance, Iowa, and continued on at Mount Saint Scholastica College in Atchinson, Kansas. She then began teaching rural school near Defiance.

On June 10, 1944, Mildred was united in marriage to Alphonse Schechinger at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. While Al served in the Navy they lived in New York, moving back to Iowa in 1950 to start farming near Panama. In 1952, Mildred suffered a series of strokes from which she recovered, and six children were born to this union: Robert, Jolene, David, Jim, Mark and Lee. Gardening and being a homemaker brought Mildred enjoyment.

Two moves occurred, one in 1966 to Logan where Mildred taught CCD, and the next to Harlan where they became very active members of St. Michael's Catholic Church. Here she was instrumental in the refunding program which raised over two hundred thousand dollars to furnish new pews and windows for the church. This program was very important to her.

Being an avid reader, especially when it came to current events and politics, Mildred enjoyed discussing world affairs, often taking the opposing side so she could debate a topic more thoroughly.

Mildred and Al became residents of the Avoca Assisted Living Center in Avoca where on June 10, 2004, they celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary.
