James Marvin Selway, aged 72, passed away suddenly on December 12, 2021, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. A staunch Catholic, he was ever faithful in receiving the Sacraments, and died wearing Our Lady's scapular. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Margaret, and his oldest brother, Bill. He is survived by his five brothers, and his sister.
Jim was born in Montana on May 12, 1949, the third of eight children. When he was 2 years old, the family moved to Richmond, California where he attended St. Paul's Church and School. While attending Salesian High School, he manifested his love for sports participating on the crew and football teams. After high school, Jim worked at Selway Machine Tool, a company which his father had started in 1960. While working, he studied at California State Hayward and graduated with a degree in business. In 1986, Jim, with two of his brothers, started Selway Brothers Machine Tool Company in Anaheim, California. Later he established another company, CNC Solutions, in Fremont. He was well-known throughout the Bay Area as an honest, hardworking salesman and businessman.
On December 18, 1971, Jim married his wife whom he had known since childhood days at St. Paul's. (This December 18th would have been their 50th anniversary). They were blessed with nine children: ; 47 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.
A man of strong faith, hard work, and great generosity Jim was a hero and role model to his children. He always put God first, and baseball second! A great athlete and coach, he taught his players to be champions both on and off the field. Amongst his peers, he was a man who saw what needed to be done, and did it. Because he was both motivated and a motivator, he was a driving force behind many projects at school, at work, and even at his daughters' convent in Round Top, New York. Jim truly knew how to work, pray, and play.
Jim was known, loved, and respected not only by his family, but by many friends across the nation, and will be long remembered in their hearts and prayers.
Viewing will be at St. Thomas More School on Saturday, December 18, at 9:00 am, followed by the recitation of the Rosary at 9:45 am, Mass at 10:00 am, and the burial at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the Daughters of Mary.
