Obituary.

Henry Herbert Elgin was born at Clarksville, Pike county, Missouri, October 10th, 1847 and passed away at his home here January 28th, 1922 at the age of 74 years, 3 months and 18 days. He was the son of Francis Callis Elgin and Dorcas Ann Limerick and the seventh child of a large family. His mother lived to the advanced age of 90 years and left the largest number of descendants of any other woman in the community where she resided.

January 2nd, 1887, Mr. Elgin was united in marriage to Miss Ione Rogers and to this union nine children were born, all of whom have grown to manhood and womanhood, except one which died in infancy. The children are: Ratchey R., and Paul H., of Wichita; Mrs. Maude Altheide of San Antonio, Texas; Mrs. Virginia Peck of Buda, Texas; Hurley G., Harry D., and Mrs. Mable Askew of Dodge City and Miss Agnes Elgin of this city.

Mr. Elgin came to Arkansas City in 1887 and with the exception of 10 years spent in western Kansas, has resided here continuously.

Mr. Elgin was a splendid man, one of the sturdy staunch characters that make the back-bone of a community. He was a faithful Christian, having united with the Christian church in early life and followed its teachings as best he could. He fought the battles of life courageously and through adversity as well as prosperity he wore a smiling countenance. He has to his credit a fine family of useful men and women who will miss the cheery words and smiles but will revere the memory of a kind and loving father. His useful companion survives him and two sisters who were unable to be present. Also a cousin, Mrs. Belle Miller and her daughter, Mrs. Cole E. Beck of this city.

The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the Central Christian church. The wonderful sermon delivered by Rev. McQuiddy was a great comfort to the sorrowing family. The many and beautiful floral tributes were part to show the high esteem in which the deceased was held among his many friends in Arkansas City.

About seventy clerks and officials of the Newman store were present at the funeral to pay their last tribute to their fellow worker who for the past several years has been employed as night watchman at the Newman store. The long services were also beautiful and sweet.

His four sons acted as pallbearers, Ratchey R., Paul H., Hurly G. and Harry D.

Interment was made in the Parker cemetery.
