John E. O'Connor Capt., USN (Ret.), 78, of River Heights Drive, South Kingstown, died Thursday. He was the husband of Dorcas E . (Fraser) O'Connor

Born in New Haven, CT, he was a son of the late John and Hannah (Leahy) O'Connor .

Mr. O'Connor was a 1952 graduate of the US Naval Academy at Annapolis and of the Submarine School in Groton, CT. He served on the USS Redfin, the polaris submarine USS Ethan Allen and commanded the USS Dogfish.

He received a Masters in Economics at Old Dominion University in Virginia, attended the International War College, Washington, DC and served on the staff of the Naval War College, Newport, RI.

In addition to his wife he leaves eight children; Dr. Siobhan M. O'Connor , of Atlanta, GA, Mara K. Cole of Scituate, RI, John F. O'Connor of North Smithfield, RI, Allyn M. O'Connor of Chicago, IL, Dr. Meghan M. Dierks and Kristan M. O'Connor both of Charlestown, MA, Justin P. O'Connor of Ft. Worth, TX, and Lauren E . O'Connor of Rockville, MD; five grandchildren, Emily and Aileen Cole, Kaley O'Connor , Henning Dierks and Shyam O'Connor , three brothers, Joseph O'Connor , Capt. USN (Ret.), Raymond and Harold O'Connor , and a sister Mary Mongillo. He was the brother of the late Robert O'Connor .

The funeral was held on Tuesday from the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas More Church, 53 Rockland Street, Narragansett. Burial followed in St. Francis Cemetery, Peace Dale. Visiting hours were Monday afternoon.
