Violet May Griffiths
October 4, 1925 ~ November 14, 2011 (age 86)

Violet May Henry, born and raised in Alston, Manchester, Jamaica, spent her formative years under the stern, watchful eyes of her grandmother. The first of three children born to Wilhelmina Smith, Tit (as her mother called her), graduated from Bailiston High School and learned to sew, becoming a skilled seamstress.

She went to live with her mother in Kingston and there met Dickie Mahabeer who was the father of her two sons, Trevor and Junior Mahabeer. Following the untimely passing of Dickie, Violet met Stanley Griffiths and they migrated to England where they were married. Their union produced three children Sandra, Terry and Robert.

Violet or "Chubby", as she was affectionately called by her husband, worked hard to help support her children but she was also doing the same for her mother and her siblings back in Jamaica. She never failed to send the eagerly awaited "Christmas Barrell" filled with toys and stylish clothes for her mother and the children and she was also sure to include goodies for other children in the community. But she was also one who loved to socialize with her friends and formed many lasting relationships.

After 15 years in England, Violet and her family migrated to the United States. She worked at Beth Israel Medical Center as a Certified Nursing Assistant for 18 years before retiring in 1987.

By then, Vie and her husband decided they had had enough of the cold and snow of the north and to make their home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She let down roots once more. She made new friends at the senior Center and enjoyed the many excursions and fun things they did. She also kept her involvement with the 1199 Union activities in the area. But she had also found a wonderful Church family at the Ascension Peace Presbyterian Church, where she immersed herself in serving that community as a founding member of the Women's Group and an Elder on the Board. Sis Vie loved her Minister and church family and helped out in any way she could. She, in turn was well loved and respected by them. She knew the spiritual value of time spent in communion with her Lord and, on a daily basis, spent time reading her Bible, the "Daily Word" and praying to her Lord.

Over the years Griff's physical health, steadily deteriorated, greatly limiting her ability to move around and maintain her independence. She was living with pain on a daily basis and relying more and more her husband. When he passed away three years ago, it seemed her health also began to fail steadily. Spending those last years living with her daughter and with her sister not far away, were bitter sweet for Vie. She realized that it was the better solution for her care needs and she would often say how much she appreciated what was being done for her but her heart was here in Fort Lauderdale and so when her daughter decided to make the sacrifice to bring her back for the final lap of her journey, it was clear to everyone who knew her that she had gotten her heart's desire to return to home.

Violet passed from this life to be present with the Lord on November 14th, 2011.
She leaves to cherish her memory: five children: - Trevor Mahabeer, Junior Mahabeer, Sandra Griffiths-Samuels, Terrence Griffiths, Robert Griffiths; grandchildren: Chamaine Small, Anthony Small,Serena Richards, Nikki Lyttle, Richard Mahabeer, Sherene McKinley, Garth Mahabeer, Kerryann Mahabeer, Jordan Mahabeer, Red Griffiths, Alexander Griffiths, Chynna Griffiths; Great grandchildren: Sachin Mahabeer, Sachiko Mahabeer, Dajon Lyttle, Daniel Lyttle, Gabrielle Mahabeer, Joshua Mahabeer, Jasmine Mahabeer, Chamaldray Gordon;Brother, Lloyd Russell; Sister, Nellie Anderson; Nephew, Davian Anderson; Nieces: Opel Russell, June Russell, Monique Anderson and many other relatives and friends.
