Born in Germany. Aged 62 years.

Head of pioneer Sangamon County family. Came to the U. S. in 1832 and to Springfield in 1836.

Burkhardt, John M., was born Feb. 2, 1807, in Schwarzenberg, county of Neuremberg, Kingdom of Wurtemberg. He came to AMerica in 1832, and spent two summers in Pennsylvania, and as many winters in Mississippi. He came to Springfield in 1836, and was there married, Aug. 18, 1843, to Mary E. Nagle, who was born June 24, 1827, in Bavaria, Canton Bergzabern. She sailed Oct. 20, 1841, in the ship Oceana. The vessel was wrecked off the island of Jamaica, Dec. 3, 1841. The passengers were all saved, but lost their baggage. They were transferred to another vessel, and arrived at New Orleans Jan. 8, 1842, to find the city in holiday attire in honor of Gen. Jackson's victory over the British, Jan. 8, 1815. Her father died in St. Louis, while she was detained by shipwreck. She came on to Springfield, arriving in March, 1842, and joined her sister, Mrs. Catharine Lorch, then and now the wife of Charles Lorch.

Mr. and Mrs. Burkhardt had eleven children; two died under three years, and Charles A. [note: this should be Clara A.]died, aged seven. Of the other eight -

John, born May 20, 1844, enlisted July 4, 1862, for three months, in Co. D., 70th Ill. Vol. Inf., and served five months as a Corporal. He again enlisted March 221, 1864, in Co. G, 114th Ill. Vol. Inf. for three years. He was killed June 10, 1864, at the battle of Guntown, Miss.

Bertha, born June 23, 1847, was married March 6th, 1874, to Walter F. Swift, who was born in New Bedford, Mass. They reside in Ottawa, Kan.

Charles A., Emma, Annie L., Jennie C., Ida B. and Lillie E., live with their mother.

John M. Burkhardt died Aug. 1, 1868, and his widow resides one mile east of Springfield, Il.
