Sgt. Jared Brissette graduated from Cape High in 2004 and enlisted in the Army where he was a paratrooper. He was responsible for locating and detonating deadly weapons in Afghanistan. He didn't seem like a warrior when he was younger. He was an artist and a computer enthusiast, and his sisters recall him taking apart Gameboys and VCRs. Jared detonated potential weapons caches while combing the mountains of Afghanistan. He made his bed in the hills of hostile lands and braved combat in the most dangerous parts of the world. But the enemy that claim his life was the cancer spreading through his skull and rapidly attacked his brain. He served in Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne Division in 2005. When he returned home, he married Elanor, his high school sweetheart. Soon after, he began training to leave for Iraq. On the Thursday before he died, a band of U.S. Army commanders and colleagues from Fort Bragg, N.C., visited Brissette at his parents' house in Cape Coral. In an abridged ceremony, the paratrooper was promoted from private to sergeant as his wife, Elanor, stood by his side. Soldiers also presented him with new medals he has earned this year. Jared will never again lead troops into battle. But he will always inspire those in uniform them to fight. He died at his parent's home after battling brain cancer at age 22.
