Joe Abbott
1st July 1950 was a dark day for the Speedway, for during a league match at the Odsal Stadium, Bradford, the world class rider Joe Abbott's life was tragically ended when participating in the sport he loved.
Born on the 12th April 1902 he began his career in his hometown of Burnley when he was just 16years old and by the mid 1930s, as a member of the Belle View Aces, was considered one of the best and most exciting riders of all time.
The fan favourite, known as 'Ironman' fell in his second race and was instantly killed by the rider behind him.
His fellow competitors and the event promoter believed Joe would have wanted the match to continue so the crowds were not informed that Joe had in fact ridden his ultimate race.
