New Jersey Governor, Politician, Prosecutor. He was, as a Democrat, the 47th Governor of New Jersey, serving from 1974 to 1982. Born the son of a politician, who served on the country and state level, he briefly attended Seton Hall University in South Orange. During World War II (WWII), he left school and on March of 1943, enlisted during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps, becoming the youngest squadron navigator in his bomb group. He earned the Distinguished Flying Medal and four Air Medals, attaining the rank of lieutenant with the 414th Bomb Squadron of the 15th Air Force and was discharged from the Army in September of 1945. Subsequently, he served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He returned to college using the G.I. Bill, attending Princeton University and graduating in 1949 with a degree in Public and International Affairs. He received his law degree from Harvard University and was admitted to the New Jersey bar in 1951.
