Born Louis Abel in France, Rev. Father Felix-Marie Abel, O.P., was a Dominican priest of the Catholic Church renowned for his work in the Holy Land as an archeologist, geologist, cartographer, and Biblical scholar who taught for over 40 years at the Ecole Biblique in Jerusalem. He came to Palestine in 1897 to study at the French School of Biblical and Archeological Research. He joined the Order of Preachers in 1898 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1902. He became a professor at the Ecole in 1905. He led many research expeditions throughout the Holy Land and published the two-volume "The Geography of Palestine" in 1932 and 1938. He was appointed to the Pontifical Biblical Commission by Pope Pius XII in 1940 and based on his research at Emmaus he published "The Books of the Maccabees" in 1948. His two-volume "The History of Palestine" was published in 1952, one year before his death at age 74.
