A. P. Gardiner was killed in the explosion of the boiler of the steam transport Milton Willis (aka Ada Hancock) in the Wilmington channel of San Pedro Harbor, Los Angeles County, California. His remains were recovered and he was buried in the Drum Barracks Cemetery. He was a resident at La Paz, Baja California, and Carson Valley, Nevada.
