Anthony's professional contributions and accomplishments were many. He began his career in healthcare at the City of Hope in Duarte, later he became the Hospital Administrator of St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, and he retired in 2003 from the Hospital Council of Southern California (HCSC) as their Senior Vice President. During his tenure at the HCSC and after he retired, Anthony served on several hospital boards of directors including Saddleback Hospital. He was instrumental in the establishment of dozens of trauma centers in the Southland. And one of his proudest life accomplishments was his work alongside Elizabeth Dole at the Red Cross and their success in providing the polio vaccine to literally every country in need of it, thus eradicating the disease. Anthony was an inspiring and compassionate leader with a strong passion for helping those in need. During his retirement party, many dignitaries within the Healthcare Industry were in attendance and Anthony was honored with a Proclamation from the City of Los Angeles and the State of California for his work that helped so many.
Anthony was at his very core a family man, a spiritual man, and he cared deeply for his family and his Catholic faith. He loved spending the holidays surrounded by his large and loving Italian family. He enjoyed traveling all over the world to the places where his ancestors lived. He loved a good book, a good round of golf, good food, James Bond movies, and a nice glass of vino.
Anthony is survived by his four daughters whom he loved dearly, from youngest to eldest: Lia Abbate of Santa Monica, Laura Abbate of Pahrump, Nevada, Carolyn Wilson of Corona, and Cheryl Abbate also from Corona. His Granddaughter, Kelsey Wilson, was his pride and joy. And his Son-in-Law, Scott Wilson, he loved like a son. Anthony is also survived by his two brothers: John Abbate of Likely and Bill Abbate of Laguna Woods.
