John L. Thomas, 70, Pleasant Hill township supervisor, died Thursday afternoon (Aug. 23, 1951) at four o'clock in his home in Pleasant Hill. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Pleasant Hill Baptist church conducted by Rev. Sawyer. Pallbearers were Wm. Waugh Jr., Wm. Yokem, Wayne Barton, Dennis Pearson, Oscar Waggoner and G. L. Laughorn. Burial was in Crescent Hgts. cemetery. John Leon Thomas son of C. J. and Rhetta Dell Thomas, was born Feb. 5, 1881 in Pleasant Hill, Ill, and died Aug. 23, 1951. April 8, 1906 he was united in marriage to George Ann Humphrey and to this union four children were born, namely; Elizabeth, Leon, Lillian and Nealy, all of this community. He had seven grandchildren, Jack, Carol Ann and Maribeth Thomas, Sandra Jo and Johnny Thomas, Sidney Lee and Scottie Ann Ladow. He leaves besides his immediate family his brothers Clyde, Clay, Cal, Harry; two sisters, Edith Thomas and Erma Greene; one uncle, C. C. Thomas; one aunt, Mrs. A.P. Bower; and many relatives and friends. Two brothers, Bert and Russell preceded him in death. The kind and loving care of this father through the years of his affliction and illness by his devoted wife and children, two daughters-in-law, son-in-law and grandchildren was an inspiration to all who visited the home. Mr. Thomas was a merchant for many years, but later served as postmaster from 1921 to 1933. In 1943 he was elected supervisor of Pleasant Hill township and started his third term in April 1951. He was a loyal member of the Baptist church, the 1.0.0 F. Lodge, the Lions Club and the Cemetery Association. Mr. Thomas was a man of integrity, possessing a bright intellect; he was a kindly neighbor and deeply loved by all who came in contact with him. Truly a devoted husband, father, grandfather, faithful friend and Christian citizen has gone to his reward, leaving a lovely memory to be cherished by many. Due to failing health Mr. Thomas had been absent from the past two meetings of the board of supervisors. A resolution of good wishes to Mr. Thomas was introduced at the last meeting of the board by his lifelong friend and fellow supervisor, John Johnson of Perry. Mr. Thomas took a keen and lively interest in all county affairs, and displayed a great sense of humor frequently at meetings of the supervisors.
