With his wife, Elizabeth (Morton) and four known children: Margaret (1799-1838) who married William Boston in Ontario, Stephen/Steven (1801-1873) who married Isabella Thompson in Ontario, Elizabeth (ca1803-1881) and Mary (1807-1897) who married Alexander Johnson also in Ontario. They emigrated from Scotland in 1820 and settled on a farm in Beverly Township, Wentworth County (near the settlements of Troy and Lynden) in Ontario, Canada, near the city of Hamilton.

No marker or burial location has been found for Hugh or his wife Elizabeth. The possibilities are: home farm, Troy Cemetery or West Flamboro Presbyterian Cemetery both where later family members are buried.
