Son of William "Manning" and Mary Thornton Griffis. Half brother to:
Daniel Kirkland Griffis;Elizabeth A. "Lizzie" Griffis Thornton; Paul Gober; Marie Griffis and Julia Griffis. Full brother to: Minnie Griffis and Annie Belle Griffis. Husband of Clara Thompson. According to Emmett's death certificate, he was a retired mail carrier for the city of Screven, Georgia. According to a letter from Vera Griffis Westberry (niece of the subject): "Uncle Emmett and daddy(Daniel Kirkland Griffis) had different mothers but the same father. Jesup, Georgia september 12 (1945) Emmett L. Griffis, age 65 of Screven died this morning at a local hospital (Colvin Ritch) after a long illness (prostate cancer). He was born in Wayne County and was an active member of the Methodist Church. He was a retired mail carrier. Funeral services will be held at 4:30 o'clock, Friday afternoon at the Screven Methodist Church. Services will be conducted by the Reverend CS Eason assisted by Reverend FH Harris of Screven and the Reverend Lester Dixon of Patterson. Burial will be in the Screven Cemetery with the Harrison Funeral Home in charge. Active pallbearers will be: JE Franklin; JL Grace; Elkin Tyre; Dr. JL Johnson; RG Thornton and Joe Brown Wilson. Honorary pallbearers will be: NE Joiner; PL King; Dr.JL Tyre; Dr. JA Leaphart; JC Hatcher; WM Burton; WL Wasdin and Dr. Carl Drawdy. Eight District Letter Carriers will be an honorary escort.
